カリフォルニア大各校の植物学者が協力して、アスタキサンチンを生産する種類の藻のゲノムを解読して遺伝子辞書を作成した。これによりアスタキサンチンの製法改善が期待される。加えて、この数年でゲノムの解読によるモデル生物の解明が進み研究速度が急速に改善したが、藻の分野でもこれが行われたことになる。
