陸上植物から燃料を作ると、食料と土地の奪い合いをする問題が起きるので、藻が注目されている。なかでも　Fistulifera solarisという藻は多量の油の生産と急速な成長を同時に行う特徴ががある。この藻は日仏の共同研究で、日本で発見された。
