淡水の表面に浮くアオウキクサが燃料に使える可能性が米国化学会内部で話題になっている。成長が速く理想的な条件がそろっているが、バイオ燃料への利用はほとんど研究されていない。藻との違いは少量のリグニンとセルローズが含まれていることで、この対策が課題だが、5年以内に実用化できると言う予測もある。
