欧州で行った遺伝組み換えポプラの野外実験によると、リグニンの合成経路で存在する酵素CCRで下方制御した試料はバイオマスを糖に変換する率が高いが、制御が強すぎるとバイオマスの収率が低下することが分かり、後者の問題が解決すればCCRによる下方制御には効果があると結論した。今年始まる新しい実験では別の酵素CAD-enzymeで下方制御する。
