バイオ燃料メーカのサファイアとアラバマ大、サンディエゴ大の共同で、戸外池の原料藻の栽培に伴う寄生藻の特徴づけを行い、寄生体の不動胞子が微細な糸状の偽足を作っていること、寄生藻が解明されていないCryptomycotaに属していること、これがこれまでの理解以上に多様であること、寄生体による被害が破壊的なことなどが分かった。
