ベンチャー企業のProterro社が、光合成機能のあるシアノバクテリアを大型透明容器の中に設置した繊維布に水と栄養分を滴々供給する方法で、液体バイオ燃料の原料となるサッカロースを高収率で安く生産でき、水の消費量も削減できる技術を開発した。実験室と実験農場ではめどがつき、工業化に挑む。
