Growing Better Biofuel Crops

Research is underway to reduce the use of food crops for biofuels by shifting to dedicated energy crops and agricultural residues.

現在の主なエネルギー植物はトウモロコシとサトウキビだが、今後は需要増に合わせて高収率で水と肥料の消費が少ない草と木にシフトする。収率の改善には遺伝子操作などで開花・結実を制限し、多量のバイオマスを蓄積する期間を長くする。燃料に加工し易いように、バイオマスの構成も変える。今後の人口増加、気候変動に対応するためには、高度な学際協力と大局的な政策が必要である。
