新しい研究によると、現在バイオマスは主に燃料としてしか利用されていないが、ほかの原料とは異なり化学結合の中にエネルギーを蓄えているので、液体燃料のほか化学物質の出発原料としても利用効果がある。この目的にバイオマスを利用するためには現有の価値連鎖を壊さなければならないので、目標製品の厳選が必要である。
